Ask the Expert – Amber Bird

We caught up with Amber Bird, talented Extensionist at renowned salon, Michael John Hair Artwork…

Tell us about your hairdressing career…

After completing my university degree in Performing Arts, I started working for my parents at their salon in Peterborough, to keep me busy. After three months I found myself starting my NVQ Level 2 and a year and a half later had completed my NVQ Level 3 and Assessors Award. Guess you could say I caught the hairdressing bug – but I wouldn’t change it for the world!

What do you love about your job?

I love being able to transform someone for the better. My favourite story was a gentleman who came to me when I first qualified, I changed his whole haircut and after a couple of visits he had a promotion, new car and was much happier with life. It’s nice to think that you’re helping someone, and that your work can have a big impact. He’s now engaged and still comes to me every four weeks for the latest cut!

Who is your industry idol and why?

I’ve always loved the work of Christel Lundqvist. She’s an amazing colourist and uses colour choices that no one else would comprehend. She’s also a really lovely person.

How long have you been working with Great Lengths?

Our salon has used Great Lengths since we started doing extensions over 15 years ago! When I qualified I knew I wanted to learn the craft. Having only been trained in extensions for three years I can’t imagine using anything else! The quality of the hair is second to none and the team at Great Lengths is lovely!

What has been your favourite Great Lengths transformation?

My favourite Great Lengths transformation was for a young girl who had suffered with alopecia in the past, and had extremely fine hair that was practically see-through. It was an amazing feeling to help her feel like woman again by adding just 50 bonds for extra thickness. The difference was incredible and I use the before and after photos all the time, to show future clients!

What one piece of advice would you give to someone considering hair extensions?

Ask to see before and after pictures of their work. That should give you an indication of the style of their work and if it’s suited to you.
