Lisa Shepherd’s Hair Extensions Care Advice

Want to know how to keep your Great Lengths hair extensions in tip-top condition for longer? Great Lengths Consumer Ambassador and hairdressing legend, Lisa Shepherd gives you the lowdown on how to care for your Great Lengths hair extensions…

Washing

Don’t be afraid to really get in there when washing your Great Lengths, it is important to get right to the roots of your hair and ensure your scalp and bonds are clean. I would recommend that whilst washing your hair in the shower, you tilt your head back to go with the flow of the water, this will make it easier to tame once you begin styling it.

I also recommend you use a paraben-free shampoo which will be gentle on the bonds – helping ensure they remain in perfect condition for as long as possible. Great Lengths have an Aftercare range which is specifically designed to care for your hair extensions.

Brushing and Backcombing

Many people don’t realise that there is a right and a wrong way to brush hair extensions – brushing them in the incorrect way can weaken the bonds. In the same way, backcombing your extensions using the incorrect method can tangle the hair. The good news is that once you know the right ways, it couldn’t be easier.

First of all, ensure that you are using a suitable hairbrush. I would recommend the Great Lengths’ paddle brush as the bristles are placed far enough away from each other to avoid catching on your extension bonds, whilst still taming any tangles.

When brushing your extensions, sweep the lengths of your hair to one side and support in your hand. By doing this you can ensure that if you come across a tangle you won’t pull at the bonds when you try to tame it out. Backcombing is often considered an absolute no-no for hair extensions wearers, but it can be achieved, if you know the right technique! The important thing to remember is to avoid backcombing between the root and hair extension bond. Great Lengths has created a video guide to show you two different backcombing options for you can try – take a look here.

Styling

Heat and hair extensions have to be approached carefully, which is why it is so important to know how to use your styling tools in perfect conjunction with your hair extensions. To make sure you have your styling technique down to a ‘T’, why not have a watch of these ‘how to’ videos.

If you’re using straighteners or a waving wand to style your hair extensions, start at the nape of the neck and work upwards, always use a heat defence spray and apply the styling tool underneath the bond attachment. The most important thing to remember here is to avoid holding the styling tool against your extension bonds.

When blow-drying your hair, make sure you dry the bonds thoroughly and always brush the lengths as your dry, to help prevent any tangles.

Dressing Hair

A lot of hair extensions wearers worry about pulling their hair up into ponytails or hair-up styles in case their bonds are visible. Ponytails are one of the key catwalk styles of the season and it really couldn’t be easier to achieve this look – whether you wear hair extensions or now. Take a look at Great Lengths’ ‘how to’ video guide here.
