This week we caught up with Melanie McDonald, co-owner of the Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique in Peterborough, to see why she loves working with Great Lengths…
Tell us about you and your experience in the industry…
I’m currently the co-owner of the Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique in Peterborough and I’ve been in the hairdressing industry since I left school. Before opening my own salon in 2011, I was a member of an Artistic training team who visited hairdressing salons around the UK. During this time, I was selected to join the ghd artistic team where I was mentored by Akin Konizi and worked on photo shoots and major international shows like Salon International.
My team at Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique is a group of very talented and experienced stylists and we are passionate about every style we create. I’m particularly proud of being a Wella Master Colour Expert, a Great Lengths hair extension specialist and being able to provide my clients with some of the best hair products in the market.
What made you get into working with pre-bonded hair extensions?
Many of my clients wanted to improve the thickness of their fine hair, so after researching extensions I decided to train with Great Lengths. They have the reputation as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of hair extensions’ and I only wanted the best quality for my customers. Since training with Great Lengths I have found the application of the pre-bonded hair easier and more precise than the loose hair that I used previously.
Why do you think so many people are now choosing hair extensions to enhance their hair?
Growing your hair can take a long time so many people opt for hair extensions as it’s an easier way to enhance your hair. Additionally, I think that customers are more aware that if extensions are done properly, they give a completely seamless blend.
For those readers who are yet to try Great Lengths but have always wanted to make more of their hair, what would your advice be?
My advice would be to ensure you select a salon with an excellent reputation of using extensions, ask to see visuals of their work and make sure you take home the Great Lengths aftercare products to maintain your new locks. If you are thinking of getting extensions then just go for it as they are so easy to look after and feel and look just like your own hair.
What’s the most common question you get asked about extensions?
The most common question is ‘will they damage my hair’ and my reply is absolutely not as long as they are attached by an experienced stylist and you follow the simple maintenance steps. During the application process there is only a very low heat applied to the bond so unlike those with hot glue heat damage does not occur.
What do you think the next trend in hair extensions will be?
I think extensions will be used for adding bulk and thickness to styles such as the ‘Lob’ (long bob) rather than just adding length. A few extensions can make a big difference in achieving a more structure look within a haircut.
What has been your favourite Great Lengths transformation?
I don’t necessarily have a favourite transformation as I love creating different styles. My favourite part of any transformation is when my client leaves my salon with a big confidence boost and is much happier with their overall look.
