Lucy Graham – Ask The Expert

Tell us a bit about your experience in the hair industry?

I started out in the hairdressing industry when I was 16, where I worked at Toni & Guy in Leeds and trained to become a hair stylist. I then went on to work in various salons around Leeds city centre after going self-employed at the age of 22. In November 2014 I trained with Great Lengths and that’s where my career in hair totally changed. I now focus solely on extensions.

What would you say to those thinking about trying Great Lengths?

I would advise anyone who is thinking about getting Great Lengths to have a free consultation with a certified stylist. You have nothing to lose and there’s no commitment. So many people are nervous about their first set of extensions, but once they have them, they never look back.

We’re sure you get asked lots of questions about hair extensions. What are the most common?

The most common questions are, will you be able to see them? Will my hair be damaged? And recently I’ve been getting a lot of middle-aged clients asking if they are too old for hair extensions? Here’s what I tell clients with these concerns:

Will you be able to see them?

The bonds are tiny and are the same colour as the hair itself, most of the time the ones applied nearest to your hairline will be halved so the bond is even smaller and so discreet.

 Will they damage my hair?

In short, no. Great Lengths bonds have been created with patented technology, which means the bonds behave like natural hair – the bond synchronises with the hair, expanding and contracting accordingly when wet or dry, allowing for flexibility and for your natural hair to move freely – which in effect means less damage and stress to your hair and scalp. The unique bonds have been scientifically proven not to cause damage to healthy hair when applied correctly and well maintained.- for example following the aftercare programme and booking in for regular check-ups with your stylist.. Make sure when it’s time for them to be removed, it is done by your Great Lengths extentionist. So many of my clients can’t believe how much their natural hair has grown, once they have their extensions removed. It’s crazy!

Am I too old?

You are never too old to have extensions! As well as adding length, they are also perfect for creating volume and filling in sparse areas, which can be common with some of my older clients.

Why do you think so many people are now choosing hair extensions?

I think people take a lot more care in their appearance in general these days, they want to feel good about themselves and feel confident. Your hair is a massive part of that and it can totally change the way you look and feel. And, it’s also great to see more and more clients understanding that extensions are not just for adding length, they can be used to add volume and colour too.

What made you want to start working with hair extensions?

I had heard about Great Lengths through a few colleagues – they have a great reputation as the leaders in the world of extensions. I researched them and noticed that all of the celebrities were having them and I think I was just sick of wearing weaves and hair which wasn’t of good quality myself to be honest.

What do you think the next trend in hair extensions will be?

Through the colder months I think there is going to be a lot of thick fringes coming through! Either people cutting them in or trying to grow them out, both work well with extensions.

What has been your favourite Great Lengths transformation?

I love this transformation because it shows how Great Lengths can really enhance colour and condition. My client had weak hair and had a lot of breakage. She didn’t want to damage her hair further using chemicals and dyes. Cue Great Lengths, which added more depth in terms of colour and gave her a beautiful fuller looking finish.
